Woonsocket cat "Pick of the Litter" 6/24 - Adopted

Update: 7/1/08 - This sweet girl has found a home- good for you!

One of the 18 cats found abandoned in a Woonsocket apartment is our pick of the litter this week. She and several others are becoming available for adoption, and the rest have gone out to area shelters.

Thanks to Husky Foster Parents

Last week on "Pick of the Litter" - as seen on ABC 6 News, we asked for foster parents to take some of our husky puppies into their homes. As they are part of an investigation, they have been staying at our shelter for some time, and this will give them the chance to be in a home environment.
We have 1 puppy, an adult mother and adult male left. Qualified individuals are asked to contact us if you are interested in being a foster parent.

Alice Rediscovers "Cat- Itude!"

June 23, 2008 - 19 LBS 11 oz.

For a cat who had lost most of her mobility, living the life that most cats have was not possible for Alice when she weighed 26 LBS at the time of her surrender. For those who know her story, you'll remember that she could barely walk. She would take a few steps and have to stop to pant. She could not groom herself - not her chest, tummy, or behind.

But as she has started to lose weight:

  • she started grooming her paws, her face, and now down the inside of her legs.

  • she walks without panting, and enjoys visiting staff and guests

  • visible weight loss, particularly around the neck

  • has shown a new interest in birds.............
In a nutshell, she is becoming a cat again!

Fudge - Adoption Update

Dear Staff & Volunteers of the RISPCA,
My husband and I can not thank you enough for our adopted "Fudge" - though his name should really be Shadow, because no matter where you go he is right there by your side!
We could not have handpicked a better pet, not only for us but our children & grandchildren to enjoy walks and the pool with! I never thought we would be this lucky after the death of our beloved Meeko.
P.S. A special thank you to the 3 staff members who helped us chase Fudge down on that first day.
Sincerely,
Barbara & Larry

18 cats abandoned in Woonsocket apartment

The landlord of a Woonsocket apartment building called authorities to report that 18 cats had been abandoned by the owner, and the RISPCA removed them Tuesday. As our shelter is filled to capacity with our cat population, Dr. Finocchio told TV reporters that we were asking other shelters to help with the overflow.

Slinky Malinki the cat

Do you have kids who have read this book? Slinky Malinki by Lynley Dodd is about a black cat who has a funny kink in his tail..... and we have a guy available for adoption who looks just like him. So he was renamed in honor of the book and you can see he has the tail just like his namesake.
You can see more pictures and his video at his profile on Petfinder.com.......click here. Lots of our cats and dogs have short little video clips so you can see them playing a bit or posing for you.

Alice the Cat now 20 LBS!

Update
It's official - Alice has another victory in her battle to lose weight, from her start of 26 LBS. She has steadily dropped about 1/2 LB a week - right on target. She has been on Hill's Pet Food prescription diet since May, under the direction of Dr. Amy Karls. She is doted on by staff and friends, lots of petting and grooming.

She likes to be brushed out but dislikes having her ears cleaned - thats her cue to leave the room and pout. And sit in the closet if need be! But 99% of the time she is sweet as can be, loves company and is curious about visitors. Her mobility has improved tremendously, and she is walking just fine. It won't be long when she'll be able to jump just like other cats!

Thanks to the children who created the artwork of our animals -

the one above is Alice.
